YHA is a charity. We work with 500,000 children and young people a year through stays in our 150 hostels; adventure in our activity centres and through our leading work in volunteering, traineeships, apprenticeships and youth employment. We have a thriving schools programme and work with partners to support access for those children and families who have challenging lives.

A vacancy has arisen for a Regional Safety Manager to cover the North of England.  You will be a central part of YHA’s support services to its network, ensuring it operates within the full range of safety risk issues whilst being flexible to adapt to business changes.  The role gives great variety, under-taking safety visits, completing fire risk assessments and taking responsibility for safeguarding matters as they arise.

As Regional Safety Manager you will:

Enable the network to perform in line with all aspects of the risk team agenda

Deliver a high-quality service, developing the competence of managers in managing risk

Develop key beneficial relationships
Be accountable for the performance, risk and compliance of risk performance with the regions

The Regional Safety Manager – North of England region will report to the Head of SSHEQ.  The service provided by the SSHEQ Team has a significant impact on YHA.

Due to the nature of the role we are looking for candidates who are qualified to NEBOSH certificate level or NVQ level 4/Degree level, with experience of continuing professional development.  You will also be required to hold a professional membership of an appropriate Health and Safety body.

This role will cover areas of the Lake District stretching across to Northumberland and Yorkshire, and as far south as Manchester. Due to the geographical nature of the role, a number of overnights each week will be considered necessary.

Our people share a set of values and a common purpose: to improve the health, well-being and life chances of all, but especially young people with challenging lives.

Our ‘HEART’ values help guide our behaviours and we want to see people who are:

HELPFUL- Hospitality experience is great but not essential, but we do want people who are proactive, flexible and willing to learn

EFFICIENT – Hardworking with an eye for detail to ensure our guests receive the best possible standards during their stay

AUTHENTIC – Straightforward, honest and passionate about building rapport with new people

RESPECTFUL- Genuinely interested in people, empathetic and professional

TEAM SPIRITED- responsible and enjoy working in a team environment, but can also work alone

Working for a charity such as YHA can be extremely rewarding but here are some of the other benefits of working for YHA:

10 FREE hostel stays in any YHA Hostel across the country and free YHA Membership

BUPA healthcare cash plan (Claim money back for dental, optical and medical treatments)

Discounted Gym Membership
Discounts and cash-back offers from high street retailers, supermarkets, holidays, car insurance and much more!

Your health and well-being is important to YHA, with regular opportunities for one to one meetings and a supportive culture

Career pathways and development opportunities including Apprenticeship programmes available for all employee’s subject to criteria

As this role is field based the successful applicant must hold a current UK driving license and will be entitled to a car or car allowance as part of the role.  There will be a need to travel throughout the network and to be flexible with overnight stays as and when required.

Please note: In order to become an employee at YHA you must be able to produce evidence of your Right to Work in the UK and a satisfactory DBS check must be completed before a start date can be confirmed. YHA is committed to safeguarding and ensuring the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all employees and volunteers to share this commitment. The suitability of all prospective employees or volunteers will be assessed during the recruitment process in line with this commitment and a DBS check will be carried out for all successful applicants
