Job Description: The Opportunity

Sparkworks is the part of future systems that develops disruptive capabilities. Its current focus is; RF Directed Energy Weapons (RF DEW), Laser Directed Energy Weapons (LDEW), Low Observability (LO) and Emerging Technologies. Its aim is to mature concepts using new and unusual tech, deliver prototypes, demonstrations and trials, ultimately delivering step changes in capability to the UK and friendly nations. This opportunity is to head up the systems team within Sparkworks.

Physics, engineering or mathematical background
DV or willingness to hold a DV (Developed Vetting security clearance)
 
A candidate who additionally possesses several of the following attributes would be particularly suited to the role:

Ideally holding a higher degree (e.g. Masters or PhD) in a physical sciences or engineering discipline
Familiarity with well-known computer simulation codes (such as PSPICE, Matlab, CST MWS, COMSOL)
Familiarity with examination of large datasets
Experience of systems requirements capture and management
Hands-on practical / laboratory skills

The Role

This role is best suited to an engineer with a broad range of systems engineering experience as well as team directing and supporting skills and the ability to set and drive strategic direction. It is broad reaching and includes a wide variety of activities.

Supporting a growing team of systems engineers, effects & vulnerability modellers & trial planners, including workload forecasting, resourcing and people development
Strategic direction setting for both future product line development and supporting activities such as trials, tooling development and modelling approaches
Technical oversight of all team activities ensuring on time, on cost and on quality delivery
Customer liaison with key stakeholders across the DEW community including DSTL, DE&S, WECA and others, through technical forums, bid generation & contract management sessions
Capability development for Future Directed Energy Weapons (DEW) including; concepting, trade studies, battlespace awareness and Operational Analysis (OA), Defence Lines of Development (DLOD), Whole Life Costing (WLC), use study vignettes, Military Utility Studies (MUS), balance of investment (BOI) studies & technology route mapping
Development of effects understanding including: DEW experiment planning, systems support and oversight of trials conduct, experiment / trials analysis,tool development, statistical data, provision of technical expertise in effects across Sparkworks and MBDA
Provision and expansion of performance modelling capabilities including; DEW system performance assessment, performance prediction, modelling strategy development and tool creation, tool verification, validation and certification, use of specialist Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) modelling tools such as microwave studio CST, matlat, Simulink, wonat etc
Certification of tools, trials, software and products including; verification and validation planning, certification delivery and securing approvals
Some traditional system design activities such as; Cardinal Point Specification (CPS) development, functional breakdown, system architecting, subsystem definition, requirements management & certification
