Job Description: James Gray Recruitment are currently working in partnership with David Narro on the growth of their business across Scotland. One of the roles that David Narro is currently working on is a Associate Structural engineer for their Edinburgh office and will help support the management team and allow for continues success for their project delivery. 

Job Description

• A senior technical member of staff who has been in a management position (Section Leader or similar) for a number of years and with considerable technical knowledge, project management and personnel management experience.

• Managing/coordinating the work of one or more teams. Responsible for planning the availability and utilisation of technical resources in their office and reporting this information to Senior Associates to enable them to report on resourcing across the practice as a whole.

General Requirements and Attributes for Role

• Minimum 10 years’ experience (post-graduation).

• Active interest in relevant external organisation or institution.

• Proven commitment to practice beyond contractual obligation.

• Proven ability to generate new business.

• Ability to lead by example and set a standard for behaviour in terms of professionalism, integrity, work ethic, commitment, attendance and timekeeping.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
• Management...of projects, section leaders, section staff and workload, efficiency and profitability of sections, coordinating and planning the requirement for and allocation of technical resources in the office.

• Leadership…guide, mentor and motivate technical staff, set an example of behaviour. Promote the vision and ethos of the firm.

• Resourcing…manage and coordinate office resources and report to Senior Associates to facilitate reporting practice-wide.

• Design...initiating ideas, feasibility analysis, technical supervision, safety of finished structure, converting an architect's visions into functional reality.

• Training….assist in the training, mentoring and professional development of staff. Assist technical staff to develop ways of working efficiently.

• Health & Safety….ensuring staff under your responsibility are aware of risks associated with visits to construction sites, unoccupied buildings etc. Ensuring staff have appropriate PPE and other equipment for such visits. Project risk assessments and residual risk identification, defining and maintaining quality safety standards.

• Business Development…procure new work and help develop new areas of business through marketing, networking and establishing contacts.

General Duties and Responsibilities
• Develop new contacts and business opportunities.

• Assist the Senior Associates in preparing a monthly report to the Board detailing the utilisation of technical resources throughout the practice.

• Chair Senior Staff meetings (shared on a rotational basis with other Associates).

• To carry out structural design work, inspections and reports when required.

• To monitor financial performance/profitability of projects.

• To maintain continuing professional development and to keep abreast of technical developments and legislation.

• To be involved in marketing the Practice.

• Help the company to be profitable and raise profile with external clients through key relationships.

• Be involved in and contribute to tactical decisions affecting projects and the practice

• Report to assigned Director on all technical and welfare issues as necessary and on Project Owner reports.

• Work individually and as a project team member efficiently, professionally and in a helpful manner.

• To continue to develop and improve management skills

• Assist in the training and development of staff.

• Show leadership and motivate staff to continually improve their technical ability, work ethic and efficiency.

• Help the firm meet the aspirations and targets of the business plan.

• Review staffing requirements of the team.

Line Manager
• Responsible for the Welfare Training, Development and Supervision of staff.

• To carry out annual appraisals of senior staff (and other staff of when required), identifying development and training needs.

• Encourage staff to develop their career, engage in continuing professional development and become professionally qualified.

• To mentor younger staff when necessary and assist them in their professional development.

• Review Project Owner reports and assist in developing strategies for resolving financial issues affecting projects.

Project Owner/ Manager.
• To carry out or discuss conceptual/feasibility design of projects.

• To plan, supervise and manage projects and project engineers to ensure a quality service to clients.

• Ensure that Health & Safety aspects of designs are properly considered for compliance with CDM Regulations.

• To monitor financial performance/profitability of project.

Structural Engineer
• To carry out structural design work, inspections and reports when required.

• To monitor financial performance/profitability of projects.

• To maintain continuing professional development and to keep abreast of technical developments and legislation.

SER Approved Certifier
• Maintain CPD.

• To carry out certification duties in accordance with the requirements of SER.

• Assist in SER Audits.
